Woodbury Walkies

Woodbury Common is somewhere we have been meaning to go for many years but just never got round to. When our lovely friends Gav and Helena suggested taking their curly haired pooch Nelson out to stretch his legs for the afternoon Woodbury seemed the most convenient place to go, that wasn’t miles away from their front door and a great way to blow off the cobwebs from a long working week!

Woodbury Common is located just outside of Exeter, in East Devon, it is reached via the A3052 Sidmouth Road. It has everything a walk could offer, sea and river views, wildlife and an amazing history. It is also used as a military training ground by the Royal Marines.

As we set off on our walk Nelson met lots of new doggy friends as we trekked along the pebbled path ways.

The walk was a fairly muddy one so I would highly recommend taking your walking boots or wellies with you and also a hat as it can get quite windy in the open parts of the common. We didn’t plan a route to take, we just kept walking until we were met with the most import decision of the afternoon… left, right or straight on? We followed Gav’s direction and ended up doing a big loop (despite Helena and I being sure we were going the wrong way at one point).

We were met with some stunning views that afternoon and were very lucky to avoid being rained on!

The walk was quite steep at some points, but a lot of it is fairly flat, just a little uneven. We really enjoyed our afternoon and I am certain Nelson did too. He was a very mucky pup by the time we were ready to go home! But a dog is it’s happiest covered in mud and soaking wet right?!

We didn’t realise how long we had been gone for and before we knew it the sun was starting to make it’s daily disappearing act. It probably took us a couple of hours at a leisurely pace to walk the route we took but there are so many different ways you could go, you could spend many hours up there and each visit I’m sure would be different. We will definitely be back again and try a different way.

As we made our way back to the car we decided to take a detour on the way home to one of our favorite farm shops Greendale Farm Shop. They have a huge selection of local produce to choose from and do the best Fish & Chips! We each left with a bag full of goodies and made our way home for the evening.

Thanks to Gav & Helena (and of course Nelson) for taking us on Saturday, I am sure there will be a lot more walks to come!
